What Is Megger Testing?
Megger testing measures the insulation resistance between the heat trace conductor and ground using a high DC voltage. The test helps determine whether the cable’s insulation system remains intact and capable of safely containing electrical current.
Unlike a simple continuity test, a Megger test can reveal hidden damage that may not yet be causing a system failure. Common causes of insulation degradation include:
- Mechanical damage during installation or maintenance.
- Moisture ingress.
- UV exposure.
- Chemical contamination.
- Aging insulation materials.
- Physical abuse from tools, ladders, or equipment.
Even minor damage can reduce system performance and eventually lead to ground faults or complete circuit failure.
What Does a Megger Test Tell You?
A Megger test provides valuable insight into the condition of your heat trace circuit.
Healthy Insulation – High insulation resistance readings indicate that the cable insulation remains intact and effectively separates the energized conductor from ground. A healthy system typically demonstrates stable, high resistance values over time.
Moisture Intrusion – Declining insulation resistance may indicate water has entered a termination, splice, or damaged cable section. Moisture is one of the most common causes of heat trace failures, particularly in outdoor environments exposed to rain, snow, and freeze-thaw cycles.
Mechanical Damage – Physical damage from maintenance activities, vibration, or accidental impacts can compromise cable insulation. Megger testing often identifies these issues long before they become visible or cause an outage.
Aging and Deterioration – Over time, environmental exposure can degrade insulation materials. Trending Megger readings over several years allows maintenance teams to identify circuits that may require closer inspection or replacement.
Why Trending Results Matters
A single Megger reading is useful. But a series of readings taken throughout the life of a heat trace circuit is far more valuable.
By recording insulation resistance measurements, maintenance teams can establish performance trends and identify gradual deterioration before failures occur. We recommend measurements during installation, before system commissioning, during routine maintenance, after repairs, and before Winter startup.
Trend analysis helps facilities move from reactive maintenance to predictive maintenance.
What Is a Good Megger Reading?
Insulation resistance values vary depending on system length, environmental conditions, and cable type. As a general guideline, higher readings indicate healthier insulation.
Drexan recommends performing tests using a 500 VDC insulation resistance tester and verifying readings meet or exceed project specifications and manufacturer recommendations.
For Drexan self-regulating heat trace systems, insulation resistance should typically be a minimum of 20 megohms (MΩ).
If readings begin to decline significantly from historical values, further investigation may be warranted even if the circuit remains operational.
Megger Testing is About More than Compliance
Many facilities perform Megger testing simply because it is part of a maintenance checklist. However, the real value lies in protecting operations. Routine insulation resistance testing can prevent freeze-related failures and reduce unplanned downtime.
